19th Century Chairs with Canage from Thonet, Set of 4

These extraordinary elegant seats with canage and twisted plays in the back and with a label marked at the bottom of the chair see photos. Chairs are in good condition.
Michael Thonet (German/Austrian, 1796-1871) was the founder of the furniture company that bears his name. He studied as a student and founded his own furniture maker in 1819.
In the 1830s, Thonet tried to build furniture, mainly seats, of curved wooden slats and glue. His Boppard Layerwood chair became a sensation in 1836 and with his success, Thonet acquired the glue factory for his curved wood and glued furniture. While Thonet struggled for some time on the market in the 1830s and early 1840s, there was interest in his methods for bending wood in bent and elegant forms with the help of hot air steam. Thonet's curved wooden furniture rejected the oversized, heavy, male wooden furniture of the Victorian period and offered a new furniture style and design. The result was sustainable furniture that was attractive, fashionable and lightweight.
Thonet seats are marked with a label on the bottom of the seat. Most seats are rushed or canned and the bent wood supports the back and legs of the chair in soft bent styles.
