The Adoration of the Magi

The painting featured depicts the scene of the Adoration of the Magi, a favorite theme in ancient painting. It follows a traditional iconography, where the three sumptuously attired kings are depicted facing the figures of the Holy Family, placed on the left of the composition. The eldest king, kneeling in adoration of the Child while kissing His hand, has already laid his crown and sword at the feet of the Virgin, while the second and third kings await their moment to honor the sacred event, their precious gifts still in their hands.

The work, of excellent quality and mature pictorial execution, fits perfectly within the Tuscan Mannerism movement, dating from the late 16th to the early 17th century. Direct evidence suggests it is similar to the modus pingendi of the Flemish painter Jan Van der Straet (Bruges 1523 - Florence 1605), Italianized as Giovanni Stradano, who was active primarily in Florence.

Flemish by origin, his artistic training took place in Antwerp, before moving to Italy around 1550, first to Venice and then to Florence, where he found employment with Grand Duke Cosimo I within the circle of Giorgio Vasari. Some of his altarpieces for Florentine churches are noteworthy, as are the numerous drawings used to create engravings that later became widely distributed.

However, it is difficult to attribute the production of our canvas to a specific artist, as there are clear blends between the Flemish art imported by the painter and Italian art.

The painting is superbly decorative, of good execution quality, and characterized by a design with vigorous lines and a pronounced interplay of light and shade.

The work is in good condition; the canvas is sound, with scattered retouching on the surface.
