Antique 19th Century Victorian solid silver & glass monkey shaped claret jug. The jug features a meticulously crafted glass body, shaped to resemble a seated monkey, with its front paws resting on its haunches and its tail gracefully curling upward to form a scroll handle and tail. The sterling silver mounts are intricately chased to mimic the texture of the monkey's hair and feet, with the neck mount realistically shaped below an applied collar. The hinged head, which can be lifted with the help of a chain and medalion thumb-piece, the head is adorned with life-like glass eyes. Inside, the silver is lined with a gilt interior, reflecting the luxurious attention to detail characteristic of the period.

Such pieces were part of a broader trend in Victorian Britain, where claret jugs featured a menagerie of animals, from cockatoos and owls to the more rare depictions of monkeys, walruses, and kangaroos. Hallmarked English Silver (925 Standard), London, year 1892 (R), Maker RH (Richard Hodd & Son).
