About This Piece

Vintage Design

A Frank Gehry compact dining set featuring 2 bentwood maple ply Cross Check chairs matched to a maple and glass Face Off dining table manufactured by Knoll International.

Originally conceived in the late 80’s Gehry’s Cross Check chairs and Face Off table formed part of a collection produced by Knoll International in collaboration with their most famous consultant, the art collector and New York socialite Barbara Jakobson. After three years of experimentation and exploration, the collection was debuted in the Frank Gehry New Furniture Prototypes show at The Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1992 with production starting shortly afterwards; the collection proved to be an immediate success with many of the designs still being produced today. Inspired by the strength of the apple crates he played on as a child, Gehry created his ribbon-like designs using thin strips of maple ply bonded with flexible glue. The resulting structures echoed many of the sculptural and organic forms that had become his architectural trademark.

As always Gehry’s designs transcended conventions of style by exploring the essential challenge of deriving form from function and his collection for Knoll exemplified that ethos. The chairs in particular feature the same style of flowing lines and surfaces as found in many of his most famous creations. As such they appear as deconstructed elements of form that harness sweeping, sinuous curves in pursuit of the perfect sitting experience. In this way the clever use of the interwoven bent plywood slats yields with a soft spring like effect to give comfort in the seat and back.

Both the chairs and the table date from 1998 and bear the manufacturer’s mark and Gehry’s signature to the base of each piece as shown in the accompanying pictures. All the pieces in this set are in very good vintage condition with the woodwork showing small marks and signs of use as expected – the glass has no chips and only minor scratches to the surface and can be removed from the base if required for storage or transportation.

The set is perfect for a smaller dining space or in a breakfast room, conservatory or on a covered patio.

About the Creator

Frank Gehry

Architect and designer Frank Gehry was born Frank Owen Goldberg in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1929. In 1947, he emigrated to Los Angeles with his family, where he attended classes at Los Angeles City College. He went on to study at the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in 1954. After school, he worked for Victor Gruen Associates in LA. From 1956–57, he studied urban planning at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, before returning to Los Angeles to work briefly for Pereira and Luckman, and then Victor Gruen Associates again, where he stayed until 1960. In 1961, Gehry and his family moved to Paris, where he worked in the office of André Remondet. While in Europe, he found inspiration in the works of Le Corbusier, Balthasar Neumann, and others. In 1962, he returned to LA and established Frank O. Gehry & Associates in Santa Monica. Gehry & Associates became Gehry Partners, LLP, in 2001. The full service architectural firm works around the globe on academic, museum, performance, residential, and commercial projects.

Gehry is known for boldly sculptural designs, and his expressive structures often incorporate organic forms. Notable projects include the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (1997), the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles (2003), and his private residence Gehry House in Santa Monica (1979), an idiosyncratic showcase of sorts that utilized low-cost materials like chain-link fencing, corrugated aluminum, and plywood. In addition to his architectural works, he has, over the years, also designed exhibitions, jewelry, and furniture.

Gehry’s work has garnered him multiple awards, including the lauded Pritzker Architecture Prize (1989), the Lillian Gish Award for lifetime contribution to the arts (1994—he was the award’s first recipient), the Friedrich Kiesler Prize (1998), and the Lifetime Achievement Award (2000) from Americans for the Arts.

Gehry lives and works in Santa Monica.

About the Maker

Knoll Inc. / Knoll International

Hans Knoll was born in 1914 in Stuttgart, Germany, into the successful manufacturing family behind Walter Knoll & Co. Early-20th-century Germany was an epicenter of modernist design theory—most notably expressed in the products and practices of the Deutscher Werkbund association of artists, architects, designers, and industrialists, as well as the influential Bauhaus school—which advocated for design rooted in the principles of rationality, functionalism, and mass production. This milieu had a profound influence on Hans and inspired him to produce furniture for the new age. In 1937, after a stint in London, he moved to the United States and brought his modernist vision with him.

Florence Knoll (neé Schust) was born in Saginaw, Michigan in 1917 and from an early age exhibited a strong interest in architecture. After graduating from the Kingswood School for Girls in 1934, she moved across campus to the newly formed, Bauhaus-inspired Cranbrook Academy of Art to study architecture under recent émigré, Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen. There she befriended future design luminaries Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen. She went on to Columbia University’s School of Architecture to study town planning. In 1937, she apprenticed under former-Bauhaus professors Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a few years later, enrolled at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe became a life-long mentor to her.

In 1938, Hans Knoll established The Hans G. Knoll Furniture Company as a furniture exporter in a small space on East 72nd Street in New York City. As the company quickly grew, it evolved into a manufacturing business. In 1941, he opened his first plant in a former dance hall in East Greenville, Pennsylvania and hired Danish designer Jens Risom, who eventually helped him develop the first, original Knoll furniture designs. That same year, Hans met Florence on an interior design project and, recognizing her exceptional taste and eye, hired her to bring in business with architects and interior designers and, later, to provide in-house planning and interior design expertise for a growing corporate clientele. In 1946, Hans and Florence married and renamed the company Knoll Associates. That same year, the Knolls formally established the Planning Unit, solidifying the company’s role in the design of interior spaces. In 1951, Knoll International was launched as the German and French arms of Knoll, producing Knoll designs for the European market. Sadly, Hans died in a tragic car crash in 1955, but Florence remained actively involved until she retired in 1965.

Knoll’s signature pieces include Breuer’s Wassily Chair (1925), Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Chair (1929/1948), Harry Bertoia’s Diamond Chair (1952), Eero Saarinen’s Tulip Armchair (1957), as well as Florence‘s own furniture collection developed through the 1950s. Knoll’s impressive catalogue includes a who’s-who list of midcentury modern and contemporary design figures, including Jens Risom, Alexander Girard, George Nakashima, Isamu Noguchi, Richard Schultz, Warren Platner, Charles Pollock, Andrew Morrison & Bruce Hannah, Vignelli Associates, Richard Sapper, Maya Lin, Frank Gehry, and Rem Koolhaas. As of this writing, Knoll’s most recent collaboration is with David Adjaye, who designed the Washington Collection for Knoll and the Adjaye Collection for KnollTextiles. Today, the company is particularly focused on meeting the evolving needs of the 21st-century workplace.

In 2011, Knoll received the National Design Award for Corporate and Institutional Achievement from the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. The award recognized Knoll’s legacy in American modern design and the company’s commitment to promoting the relationship between good design and quality of life. Knoll designs can be found in the permanent design collections of institutions around the world, including more than 30 acquired by New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
