About This Piece

Vintage Design

This sculptural brutalist round coffee table by Paul Kingma is a powerful example of the designer’s signature approach to material, texture, and form. Produced in the Netherlands during the 1970s, the table features a visually “floating” circular top composed of irregularly sized Norwegian slate fragments embedded in concrete, forming a richly textured, mosaic-like surface with strong natural variation.

The substantial top is supported by an architectural base crafted from hammered brass, displaying a deep, naturally aged patina. The open, geometric construction creates a striking contrast between mass and lightness, a defining characteristic of Kingma’s work and of European brutalist design of the period.

Often referred to as the “Pillarguri” model—named after the origin of the slate—the table stands as both a functional coffee table and a sculptural object. Its earthy palette and tactile surfaces make it particularly well-suited to refined modern, brutalist, and wabi-sabi interiors.

A rare and highly collectible work by one of the most important figures in postwar European design.

Dimensions - Height: 40 cm (15.75 in) x Diameter: 100 cm (39.37 in)

Each piece was conceived as a functional artwork, emphasizing craftsmanship, material honesty, and sculptural presence. His work is now highly sought after and represented in significant private and institutional collections worldwide.

Colors may slightly vary due to photographic lighting sources or your monitor settings.

Wear consistent with age and use.

About the Creator

Paul Kingma

Paul Kingma

Dutch sculptor, mosaic artist, and designer Paul Kingma is best known for his somber yet beautiful ceramic and stone coffee tables.

Born in the Hague in 1931, Kingma studied art in Arnhem before training at the Rijksakademie [State Academy of Fine Arts] in Amsterdam and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Over the course of his career, he was commissioned to create a number of sculptures for public spaces in Dutch cities such as Utrecht, Eindhoven, and Amersfoort. It was in mosaic art, however, that he established his reputation for collectible design. Deeply committed to his artistic expression, Kingma famously said, “The next table is the most beautiful.” The large number of unique tables he handmade from the late-1960s to mid-1980s is referred to as the Kingma or Tableaux Series. He incorporated unique mosaics and stones into tabletops, later incorporating fossils and petrified wood into his practice. Kingma bought, foraged for, and collected these materials during his travels around the world.

Kingma sought to create tables that were first and foremost “self-contained” design objects. In addition to his furniture design, Kingma also taught sculpture and mosaics at the Institute of Visual Arts in Amersfoort, the Netherlands. Kingma died in 2013 at the age of 81.
