About This Piece

Vintage Design

Rei Kawakubo began designing one-off chairs and tables in 1983 for her two shops in Tokyo and Paris, "to create a complete environmental setting for [her] clothes”. Her first designs were chairs made of steel and granite, where she played with the limits of sculpture and furniture. When an Italian magazine editor encouraged her to license and distribute the pieces in 1986, she briefly entered limited-edition production. Around 1987, when the present lot was produced, Kawakubo opened a short-lived Comme des Garçons furniture store in Paris that was later made into the brand’s perfume store.

Chair No. 9 was designed by Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons in 1983 (part of the series from No. 1 to No. 28) and was produced by Paolo Palluco in 1986.
