CARL JOHANN LOTH (Circle of ) "Caritas Romana", oil on canvas. Recovered. Dim.: 122 x 94 cm good conditions Johann Carl Loth, also called Carlotto (Munich, 8 August 1632-Venetia, 6 October 1698), was a German painter of the Baroque era, active mainly in Venice. Other names with which he is known, in addition to the aforementioned Carlotto, are Johann Karl and Carlo Lotti. Born in Munich in 1632, he was a son and disciple of Johann Ulrich Loth (1590- 1662). from 1653 to 1655 he worked in Rome in the workshop of Willem Drost, first and foremost in that of Johannes van der Meer. He later settled in Venice, where he collaborated with Pietro Liberi and resided until his death, with only small establishments in Padua, in 1677-1678, and in Vienna. Being in Venice, he spoke of him as a «grand miniatore» in 1663. He received charges from Venice and the Terraferma. He came into contact with Venetian Tenebrist painters, which was reflected in works such as La Muerte de San Andrea Avellino (Munich, church of the Teatinos, 1677). Painted religious and mythological scenes. They are fabrics with large figures. In the church of San Silvestro de Venecia he painted San José and el niño Jesus, Dios Padre en la Gloria y la Virgen (1681). I was very well known in life, receiving the commission to paint Emperor Leopoldo in Vienna in 1692, for which I received the title of court painter.[1] His brother, Franz Loth, was also a painter, in Venice and Germany. I have numerous students, including Cornelis de Bruyn, Johann Michael Rottmayr, Paul Strudel, Santo Prunati, Daniel Seiter, and Giovanni Battista Langetti. Through his disciples Rottmayr, Strudel and Saiter, his style spread throughout southern Germany.
