Joanna Louca

Nicosia, Cyprus

Textile designer-cum-artist Joanna Louca was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1973. She studied Woven Textiles at Middlesex University in England, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in 1990, and subsequently received her Master's in Textiles from Goldsmiths University in 1996. Louca worked as a freelance textile designer and consultant in London until 2000. She began working on her own line of woven accessories during that time and presented her collections every year at Paris and London Fashion Weeks between 1999 and 2016. Her eponymous brand, Joanna Louca Woven Editions, was established in 2012, encompassing a collection of textile wall pieces, unique fabrics, and home textiles, as well as one-off, custom commissions for private clients, commercial spaces, and galleries mainly in London, Paris, and Nicosia.

These days, Joanna Louca Woven Editions offers a sumptuous range of wall pieces, throws, cushions, and home textiles in natural materials like cotton, wool, and mohair. The atelier follows the time-honored traditions of artisanal weavers; each new fabric is created through expert weaving craftsmanship on domestic hand-looms, hand-dyed, and numbered in each limited edition woven collection. The exceptional quality of the materials and hand-woven fabrics gives each piece in the collection the perfect weight, drape, and softness, with Louca’s sharp eye for subtle patterns adding a contemporary twist.

Louca’s mastery of her craft has been recognized with exhibitions at industry heavyweights like Gallery Bensimon in Paris and Sigmar London. Her work has also been included in presentations at the Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź, Poland; the Vyronos Museum in Nicosia, Cyprus; and the Armory Centre for the Arts in Pasadena, U.S.A. Past and current retailers of Joanna Louca Woven Editions include prestigious international brands such as Selfridges in London, Anthropologie and Henri Bendel in New York, Harvey Nichols in Dubai, Bon Marche Paris, and Tomorrowland and Isetan in Tokyo. Louca lives, works, and runs her studio in Nicosia.
