Study O Portable

London, United Kingdom

Study O Portable is husband-and-wife team Tetsuo Mukai and Bernadette Deddens. Mukai was born in Yokohama, Japan in 1978, and studied Fashion Design at ArtEZ in Arnhem, The Netherlands, graduating in 2005. Deddens was born in Ter Apel, The Netherlands in 1981 and studied 3D Design at ArtEZ and Design Products at the Royal College of Art in London, graduating in 2006. Having met in Arnhem, Mukai and Deddens opened their shared studio in London in 2009.

Study O Portable makes accessories and other small objects—such as vessels, jewelry, and scarves—that respect portability while questioning functionality. As the studio name implies, the designers prefer pieces that can be easily carried. Notable projects include: Fuzz Bowls (2010), a series of colorful ceramic resin vessels; Neon Alphabet (2012), a set of sculptural letters made of sterling silver and bent glass tubes that call to mind neon signs; Herringbone, Herringbone (2011), a series of screen-printed silk scarves that juxtapose two irregular images of the classic pattern on top of one another; and, most recently, the colored resin Fuzz Side Table (2013). Their work is represented by Caroline van Hoek in Brussels and Gallery FUMI in London.
