Empire Clock with Cupid Sharpening the Arrow of Love attributed to Claude Galle, 1805

This Empire clock immediately commands attention: it is not the usual mantel clock, but an object that captivates the eye through a rare subject and a sculptural conception of great refinement.
The scene depicts Cupid in the surprisingly tangible act of sharpening his arrow, assisted by Psyche. An unusual and highly evocative detail, transforming the allegory of love into a moment of quiet, almost intimate preparation.

The subject derives from a celebrated pictorial model by Charles Joseph Natoire, here reinterpreted with sculptural sensitivity and with the narrative restraint characteristic of the finest Parisian taste of the early nineteenth century. The presence of the small grinding wheel used to sharpen the arrow—rendered with precision and naturalism—reveals the hand of a refined bronzier, capable of elevating a simple, everyday gesture into a detail of great symbolic elegance.

The clock is conceived in the form of a classical urn, fully consistent with the Empire aesthetic and its revival of Greco-Roman forms. from the curved handles emerge the two figures, not applied as mere decorative elements but fully integrated into the structure of the case itself, according to a unified and sculptural conception of the whole. The central body, finished in dark patinated bronze, creates a measured and deliberately refined contrast with the gilt-bronze elements, enhancing the volumes without weighing them down.

The ensemble rests on a gilt-bronze base with onion-shaped feet, well proportioned and carefully designed to ensure stability and proper visual balance.

The quality of the bronze work is of a high level, fully consistent with fine Parisian production during the Empire period. The modeling of the figures is careful and controlled: anatomies are well resolved, faces expressive yet restrained, wings and drapery handled with a confident and assured touch. These characteristics coherently support an attribution to the circle of Claude Galle, one of the most important French bronziers of the Napoleonic era, renowned for the quality of his clocks and for a production destined both for imperial residences and for high-level private commissions.

Dial and Movement

The white enamel dial, signed Le Sieur à Paris, features Roman numerals with an outer minute track and finely pierced gilt-bronze hands. It is set within a gilt-bronze bezel decorated with a Greek key motif, a recurring element in the Empire ornamental repertoire.

The movement, by Lesieur, a Parisian clockmaker active from the early nineteenth century, is fully appropriate to the quality of the case: flat plates joined by pinned pillars, silk-thread suspension, external count wheel, and hour striking on a bell. A reliable mechanism, representative of good Parisian production of the period.

Iconography and Context

The scene of Cupid sharpening his arrow, assisted by Psyche, belongs to the learned iconographic repertoire favored during the Empire period. It is not merely a sentimental image, but a more subtle allegory: Love not as a blind impulse, but as a conscious force, prepared and governed by intention and measure.
