Empire Console attributed to Johannes Klinckerfuss and Casimir Münch, 1815-1830

The upper section of the console is surmounted by a white marble top, resting on richly chased gilt bronze plaques depicting cupids seated on hammocks formed by intertwined foliage. The marble is supported at the front by two magnificent bulbous gilt bronze columns, delicately decorated with tiny floral motifs in the characteristic manner of Casimir Münch. At the rear, the structure is reinforced by two square mahogany columns with finely chased capitals adorned with acanthus leaves. The base is enriched with gilt bronze elements featuring geometric motifs and rests on a flamed mahogany plinth supported by rectangular bronze feet.

The silhouette of the vase-shaped gilt bronze front supports is a documented signature of Casimir Münch, clearly identifiable through comparison with other well-known works attributed to him. At the same time, this console stands apart in both importance and scale from the more traditional guéridons and tables known to have been produced by Johannes Klinckerfuss and Casimir Münch, marking it as an unusually ambitious and prestigious commission.

The previous owner acquired the console in St. Petersburg several years ago. Unfortunately, no formal documentation has survived to conclusively establish this provenance. Nevertheless, a Russian origin is historically plausible, as Klinckerfuss entered into contact with the Russian noble entourage at the Tsar’s court in St. Petersburg from the earliest stages of his career, initially through the Rotenberg atelier and later through his long-standing service at the Court of Württemberg, itself closely connected to the Russian imperial court. Regardless of this aspect, the exceptional quality and ambition of the piece leave little doubt that it was commissioned by a figure of considerable importance. Scholarly research is currently underway to further clarify the provenance and original commissioning of this remarkable console.

Attribution to Johannes Klinckerfuss and Casimir Münch

A close examination of the two bulbous front gilt bronze columns cast with tiny floral motifs reveals them to be identical to the central stems of guéridons and tables signed by Klinckerfuss and Casimir Münch, sold through major international auction houses and preserved in German museum collections. Comparable examples have appeared at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Koller.

Comparative Context

The exceptional quality of Klinckerfuss’s furniture established him as the leading cabinetmaker in southern Germany. Drawing inspiration from the most advanced artistic centers of Europe, he developed a distinctive formal language and is widely regarded as the true founder of the 19th-century Stuttgart furniture tradition.

His work was admired across Europe, as evidenced by a painting by Jean-François Garneray dated 1822, depicting the Duchess de Berry and her children in their apartments at the Tuileries Palace, furnished with mahogany jardinières identical to examples auctioned by Sotheby’s and attributed to Johannes Klinckerfuss, signed by Casimir Münch of Stuttgart.

A guéridon and jardinière by Klinckerfuss and Münch are preserved in the Landesmuseum Württemberg. Furthermore, a historical photograph shows similar furnishings in the Rosenstein Royal Summer Palace, for which Casimir Münch also supplied two chandeliers in the late 1820s. The columns visible in these works are identical to those of the present console.
