About This Piece

Vintage Design

Beautiful shaped daybed from the Euroika series designed by Friso Kramer for Auping, The Netherlands 1963. Friso Kramer designed also from this series: bed cabinets, table, chair, mirror and a toilet cabinet. This daybed has a black coated metal frame with tapered feet, a spring seat and teak plywood ends. The mattress is newly upholstered in off white Richwool fabric, which gives a very nice contrast to the wood and black metal. It is in excellent condition; the framework is coated in black, the mattress is newly upholstered and the teak plywood parts are in very good original condition. The size of the mattress is 80 x 190 cm. This fantastic bed is a really nice catch for any modern bedroom or interior.

As all of our upholstered pieces, the mattress can also be newly upholstered with any fabric you prefer. We use the best quality foam and materials in combination with the upholstery you choose. For more advices or to get an affordable offer, please contact us at any time.

About the Creator

Friso Kramer

Innovative Dutch design icon Friso Kramer was an active member in many influential design associations and a driving force behind the development of the Dutch modernist aesthetic from the 1940s onward. Son of accomplished architect Piet Kramer (1881-1961), Friso Kramer was born in Amsterdam in 1922. He earned a degree in interior architecture from the Institute of Applied Art in Amsterdam under director and architect Mart Stam (1899-1986). After graduating, he sought positions to gain experience in the fields of architecture and industrial design, including work for Bureaus JP Kloos and Frans Paulussen. In 1948, Kramer began designing for the steel furniture manufacturer De Cirkel, a subsidiary of Ahrend, where he eventually became the Art Director (1971 to 1983).

During the 1950s, Kramer joined the Stichting Goed Wonen (Good Living Association), a design and industry partnership that was committed to postwar reconstruction and quality-of-life improvements through good design. The group forged many strong collaborations between artists, designers, architects, manufacturers, and customers, which resulted in widespread interest in modernist design principles and aesthetics in the Netherlands. Kramer, together with designers Wim Crouwel, Benno Wissing, and Paul and Dick Schwarz, founded the acclaimed Total Design Bureau in 1963. Their aim was to execute design ideas that would achieve “total design” or syntheses between the various design fields. This milieu had a profound influence on Kramer and inspired him to produce rational, minimalist furniture for the new age. Iconic designs from Kramer’s career include the Eames-inspired, steal and plywood Revolt Chair (1953), a true classic of midcentury Dutch industrial design and arguably Kramer’s most famous work; Straatlantaarn Streetlight (1960) for The Hague; Facet Table (1964); the ergonomic, modular MEHES office series (1972); AKD Chair (1973); and FKS Stackable Chair and Table (1998).

Throughout the course of his career, Kramer held many acclaimed positions, including member of the Amsterdam Art Council, the Dutch Industrial Design Council, and the International Design Consortium. Kramer’s designs have been exhibited in the Stedelijik Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. He is also the recipient of the title “Royal Designer for Industry” by the Royal Society of Arts in London.

About the Maker

Auping

In 1888, blacksmith Johannes Auping of Deventer, the Netherlands, was commissioned by a local hospital to construct a bed that was more hygienic than the straw mattresses in use at the time.  Working with steel, he designed a mattress that consisted of braided wires joined to a metal frame. Two years later, the Civil Hospital in Amsterdam commissioned the first major order of forty beds. After some adjustments to the original, Auping marketed the new design as a “healthy steel mattress”—with unprecedented capacity for ventilation due to airflow between the steel wires. The high demand for the newfangled mattress allowed Auping to open his eponymous factory in his hometown in 1912.

In the postwar boom era, the Auping company began to collaborate with renowned Dutch designers on an expanded product line. Highlights from this collectible phase of Auping’s history include Dick Cordemeijer’s Cleopatra Daybed (1953), Wim Rietveld’s Arielle Daybed (1955), Friso Kramer’s Euroika Tables (1963), and Frans de la Haye’s Auronde Bed (1973). The Auronde and Cleopatra remain Auping’s most successful designs to date, each having sold over a million models.

Auping obtained the addition of “Royal” to their name for their 100th anniversary and are now known as Koninklijke Auping BV in Dutch. Today, the company is the largest independent manufacturer of beds in the Netherlands, with a reputation for high quality products, innovative designs, and lasting comfort. Recent designer collaborations include projects with Piet Hein Eek, Thomas Althaus, and Jan des Bouvrie. Auping’s product line—beds, box springs, mattresses, mesh bases, tables, and chairs—are solely manufactured in the Netherlands and have won various awards over the years, such as the Red Dot Award and Cradle to Cradle certification for utilizing of more than 50% recycled materials.
