This painting depicts a street in Perigueux, "la maison des quais" in 1956.
On the quays, at the corner of the Pont des Barris, a beautiful Renaissance ensemble (15th-17th century) is reflected in the water: the Quais houses. These include the 15th-century Maison Brogliodie (also known as the "Maison des Consuls", recognizable by its machicolations and elaborate dormer windows) and the 16th-century Maison Lambert, distinguished by its wooden galleries supported by slender columns.
The artist painted this picture in the Impressionist style, with touches of paint in dark brown tones.
Fernand Laval (1886- 1966 ) arrived in Paris in 1912, where he befriended Maurice Utrillo and roamed the streets of Montmartre with his easel. In 1913, he married Rachel Cohenet and in 1920 made his first appearance at the Salon d'Automne, where he presented a painting entitled "De Montmartre aux Halles". He also worked abroad, notably in the Netherlands, painting numerous windmills in 1927-28, and traveled to Belgium, where he painted the port of Antwerp. In 1963, as a tribute to Renoir, he painted RENOIR's house "La Collette" in Cagnes-sur-mer. His favorite subjects will always be the heart of Paris, Montmartre, including the Sacré-Coeur, the Paris suburbs, the old fortifications and the Canal St Martin. Following his death, he fell into oblivion, but by 1988 interest in his work, especially his paintings of Montmartre, was selling for around $7,000 in auction houses in both England and the USA. His latest works are in dark tones of browns, earths and blacks, including this one from the 1950s.
