Elegant, kidney bean-shaped, Louis XV/ transition Louis XVI/ 18th Century style, small chest of drawers, from France.
This lovely piece with four drawers, is made of wood with elm burl and walnut veneer, with marquetry/inlay (see photos.)
Marquetery is a type of inlay, that involves assembling contrasting wood pieces into scenes, shapes, or geometric patterns. Like puzzle pieces, thin pieces of veneer are delicately assembled, and glued to the surface of a piece.
The piece has beautiful, delicate, decorated marquetry on the top, as well as on the front of the four drawers, and side panels (see photos.) The top, the center of both side panels and the drawers, have an elm burl veneer. The edging of the top, side panels, drawers and back of the piece, have a walnut veneered finish (see photos.)
The four drawers are functional, and have their original, bronze handles. Each drawer measures at: W: 26 cm x Maximum depth: 14 cm x H: 6cm), are functional and have some light old marks of previous usage and time.
The piece rests on four, arched, carved legs. The two front legs, have bronze décor on the leg tips (see photos.)
Piece is in overall good, original and vintage condition, with some light old marks, signs of age, some slightly faded areas of color, and previous use commensurate with time, on the overall structure, top, edging, drawers, inside of drawers, veneer, side panels, handles, legs and feet (see photos.) An old mark of usage on the right side of the top (see photo next to a 1 cent coin for perspective.) Some light, old marks of age and previous use on the drawers, (see photo.) A small lack of veneer on the lower, right side panel (see photo.) Piece has maintained a lovely patina of age and time (see photos.)
Because of its very practical and useful size, it could be used in an entryway on a small wall between two doors, aka "Commode d'entre deux", in a bedroom, bathroom, living room, etc.
All photos taken in natural, outdoor light, so colors may vary, based upon brightness, reflections of stone, angles and perspective in which they are viewed.
