About This Piece

Heinz Münch (*1938), Homage to Prof. Hilmar Hoffmann on his 60th birthday, probably 1985. Mixed media/paper with affixed Polaroid, approx. 30 x 29.8 cm. This multifaceted mixed-media work by the Frankfurt artist Heinz Münch is a significant testament to the close interrelationship between art and cultural policy in Frankfurt during the 1980s. Created as a personal gift for the long-serving head of cultural affairs, Hilmar Hoffmann, the work combines classical artistic techniques with the immediacy of an integrated Polaroid, lending the composition a fascinating documentary quality. The choice of colors and the dynamic application of the various media reflect the spirit of postmodernism and underscore Münch's experimental approach, a well-established figure in the Frankfurt art scene. The combination of photography and painting creates a dynamic texture that addresses both the transience of the moment and the enduring nature of the artistic gesture. from an art historical perspective, this unique piece can be classified as collage art and a portrait homage, with the inclusion of photographic material establishing a direct connection to the honoree's life. Created in Frankfurt am Main, the work documents not only a personal gesture but also a piece of the city's history. A rare collector's item for enthusiasts of the Frankfurt art scene and contemporary mixed-media art, possessing significant cultural and historical value.

About the Creator

Piet Hein Eek

Born in Holland in 1967, Piet Hein Eek graduated from the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven in 1990. While still a student, he attracted considerable attention for his Scrap Wood Cupboard (1990) project. Inspired by the beauty inherent in discarded and readymade materials, this series celebrated the contrasting textures and colors of the lumber remnants from which it was composed. With the success of this early venture, Eek was able to launch his own design studio in 1992.

The following year, he partnered with designer Nob Ruijrok, launching Eek en Rujigrok v.o.f. Today, the pair continues to work out of a 10,000 square meter multi-purpose space in Eindhoven, which includes a restaurant, shop, gallery, showroom, and studio. In addition to the collaborative work, Eek also works on individual, handicraft-driven projects.

Throughout his career, Eek’s aesthetic has centered on a love of old and discarded materials, often repurposing them using time-honored wood-working methods. His instantly recognizable work considers the tension between modernity and tradition, waste and sustainability. Eek has exhibited in venues across the globe, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Cïbone in Tokyo, and the Milan Furniture Fair.
