About This Piece

Large sandstone sculpture in an abstract shape created by the French ceramist and sculptor Hervé Rousseau. The artist's signature is affixed inside.

Hervé Rousseau creates works with archaic and primitive forms, directly inspired by nature and gesture. In 1980, he built a recumbent oven for cooking with wood. His travels, particularly in Africa, and his meeting with the Japanese potter Ryoji Koie in 2005 reinforce his instinctive approach to the earth, which he grips and shapes with force. Simplicity and speed authenticate his approach, where freedom of movement takes precedence. Each piece is unique, a true metaphor for the body and the landscape.

The sculpture was presented during the exhibition Hervé Rousseau: La trace du vent, at the La Piscine Museum in Roubaix, March-April 2015.
