About This Piece

Contemporary Design

The Hk furniture line was inspired on a traditional method of construction, the roll-up solid wooden doors. This system was widely used in the 50s-60s archive furniture, which inspired us to use this foundation in our design. The solid wooden slats bring movement to a static piece, hand out dynamism and a unique form of expression. Albiet, we didn’t want to use this in a conventional manner, we desired to create something innovative with this system. This is how the idea of using this method as a door and as covering simultaneously, like a skin, was generated. Therefor, it was the construction method that guided and built the Hk. We believe in the memory to project the future. We believe it is important to preserve the traditional techniques of woodworking, and we use them in a contemporary way to create and innovate.

About the Creator

MO-OW

Dedicated to blending modernist aesthetics with traditional Portuguese craftsmanship, MO-OW was founded by architects Ângela Frias and Gonçalo Dias in Matosinhos in 2010. Frias (1977) and Dias (1977) are both trained architects—the former graduated from ESAP in 2004; the later from University Lusiada of Porto in 2002—which carries into their simple, minimalistic, functional chairs, tables, and storage pieces.

The duo joined forces in 2004, when they launched their architectural studio A2Garquitectura for residential, commercial, and exhibition projects. Each piece handcrafted in fine wood using time-honor artisanal techniques, MO-OW furniture has been exhibited at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art of Porto; the BLOOOM Art Fair Cologne 2012; Clerkenwell Design Week London 2013; and Beijing Design Week 2014.

MO-OW

Founded and directed by architects Ângela Frias and Gonçalo Dias, MO-OW is a Portuguese design company based in Matosinhos, in the northern region of the country. MO-OW strives to create contemporary designs that draw on traditional, artisanal processes and techniques.

MO-OW furniture is carefully manufactured by hand in a small studio using generations-old, Portuguese woodworking techniques, with an end result that is both modern and classic.

Frias (1977) and Dias (1977) are both trained architects—the former graduated from ESAP in 2004; the later from University Lusiada of Porto in 2002—which carries into their simple, minimalistic designs that aim to integrate beauty with total functionality.
