About This Piece

Horst Janssen (Hamburg 1929-1995), Marcel Proust for Antiquariat Hermann Laatzen, probably 1966. LITHO, approx. 37.5 x 29 cm. This expressive and characteristic work presents an intimate portrait of the famous French writer Marcel Proust, captured in the renowned artist's unmistakable, nervously vibrant, and masterful linework. Beneath the delicate drawing is a handwritten text, serving as an advertisement or homage for the bookshop and antiquarian bookstore Hermann Laatzen at Warburgstraße 18 in Hamburg, complete with its historical telephone number. The image is further enhanced by the distinctive monogram in the lower right corner and the date '66, while the small printed number '84' in the upper right corner strongly suggests that this print likely originated from a larger publication, catalog, or portfolio. from an art historical perspective, this work fits perfectly into the graphic oeuvre of Horst Janssen, who is considered one of the most important draftsmen and graphic artists of the German post-war period and was deeply rooted in Hamburg's literary and artistic scene. Such a typographically and graphically appealing print represents a wonderful local historical document and is an extremely attractive and historically interesting object for collectors of Janssen's works as well as for bibliophiles who love the city of Hamburg

About the Creator

Horst Brüning

German industrial designer and architect Horst Brüning (b. 1934) incorporated ideas such as of minimalism, functionality, and durability into his furniture designs, and is best known for those designs produced by the influential furniture manufacturer Kill International.

Born in 1934 in Hamburg, Brüning studied architecture and interior design at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg until 1956. He also lived in Copenhagen and Stockholm, where he studied industrial design. In 1963, he established an architecture and design office in Stuttgart. During this period, Brüning met Alfred Kill of Kill International and the then-undiscovered architect duo Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm. Following an exchange of ideas, their meeting eventually led to collaboration, international recognition, and success. Brüning’s designs for Kill International include the T111 Coffee Table (1960s), 6910 Sofa (1967), 6915 Daybed, and 128 Bar Cart (both 1968). In 2008, forty-one years after its inception, the 6910 Sofa was awarded the “Best of the Best” design prize at the IMM Cologne.

Brüning’s designs for Kill International are produced today by Lange Production.
