About This Piece

Vintage Design

Set of 12 original and signed "Plia" pink acrylic glass folding chairs. NOS (new old Stock) This fantastic set was designed by Giancarlo Piretti for Castelli in 1967. PLIA, the symbol of a new era focused on plastic: this is how the plia chair from 1967 was welcomed when it was presented at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. on the occasion of the fair, the chair received so much public acclaim that many visitors walked away from the stand taking samples without even asking for permission ... following this unorthodox compliment, the chairs were tied with a chain for safety. These folding chairs are made of very rare pink acrylic glass with a chrome structure and are in perfect condition. The "Plia" folding chair is a true design classic as it has won several awards and is also part of the MoMA collection. The "Plia" chair has a fantastic folding mechanism which allows the chair to be folded very flat so that it can be stored easily. Each chair in this set is signed and engraved with the manufacturer's mark. A multipurpose and iconic set that will be perfect for a modern or minimal project. Giancarlo Piretti was born in Bologna in 1940. He attended the Bologna State Institute of Art, where he obtained the title of Design Teacher. In 1960 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. Subsequently, for seven years, he was a lecturer in Industrial Design at the State Art Institute of Bologna. In the same period, for 12 years, he worked as an interior designer for Anonima Castelli, designing their lines of furniture for the home, office and community, for which he registered numerous industrial and mechanical invention patents. His best-known projects include PLIA, a folding chair, PLATONE, a folding table, DSC (106-AXIS), a seating system for collective and institutional spaces, and SISTEMA 61, a modular sofa system. Giancarlo Piretti participates in numerous Italian design competitions, obtaining prizes and special mentions. In 1971 he received the SMAU award and the BIO 5 Distinction at the Ljubljana biennial, Slovenia for Plia. In 1973 he was awarded, as always for PLIA, the GUTE FORM mention by the Chamber of Commerce of the Federal Republic of Germany, and a special mention by the British Government. In 1971 PLANO won the IBD gold medal (USA). For the VERTEBRA seating system: in 1977 he was awarded, together with Emilio Ambasz, the gold medal of BD (USA), the SMAU prize in 1979 and the Compasso d'Oro (Italy) in 1981. As always together with Ambasz, in 1980 receives the "National Industrial Design Award" (USA) for LOGOTEC, a lighting system. In 1975 Giancarlo Piretti was appointed member of the Scientific-Didactic Committee of the Higher Institute for Artistic Industries of Florence. His work is often published in numerous international journals.

About the Creator

Giancarlo Piretti

Italian interior and industrial designer Giancarlo Piretti was born in 1940 in Bologna. He obtained his teaching degree in drawing at the Art Institute of Bologna (dates unknown), and continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna in 1960. From 1963 until 1970, he taught interior design at the Art Institute of Bologna.

Sometime in the 1960s, Piretti also joined Italian design company Castelli as an interior designer, creating home furniture and office furnishings. During his twelve years at Castelli, Piretti obtained numerous industrial patents for his designs, which were mostly chairs. Piretti’s work for Castelli garnered the company an international reputation in furniture design. His most well-known design is the plastic folding Plia Chair (1968), which has sold over seven million copies since 1969 and is still in production. It won the BIO 5 distinction and the SMAU prize at the Ljubljana Biennial in 1971, Germany’s Gute Form prize in 1973, and can be found in permanent collections in various museums world-wide, including Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia and the United States. In 1969 the complementary Plia Table was equally well-received in design circles, these revolutionary designs measured just 5 cm in depth when folded, a marvel in the 1960s.

In the late-1970s, Piretti worked with Argentine architect-designer Emilio Ambasz (b. 1943) on several award-winning designs, including the two ergonomic seating systems Vertebra (1975, winner of the Smau Industrial Design Award in 1979) and Dorsal (1981). From 1984 to 1986 Piretti worked for Castilia, a firm that was part of the Castelli group, that specialized in the production of home furniture characterized by functional and aesthetic systems.

In 1988, Piretti revealed The Piretti Collection in Chicago, which included over 50 different office chairs and seating styles. It is still manufactured by various licensees around the world. The collection, which has won several prizes including the UBD, the ASID, the Compasso d'Oro and the G-Mark, was designed to respond to the specific needs of each individual user. In 1997, the collection reached the milestone of one million chairs sold. Today, they have sold more than two-and-a-half million pieces from the collection.

Other well-known design include the DCS 106 Stacking Chair (1965); Plona Lounge Chair (1969); Alky Chair (1970s); Plantone Folding Desk (1970); Plano (1971, Gold Medal IBD); Planto Coat Rack (1972); the System 61 modular sofa system (1973); Xylon Chair (1992, two G Mark Awards 1994); and the Torsion Seating Collection (1995-6, G Mark Award 1997).

Today, Piretti lives and works in Bologna with his son, designer Alessandro Piretti.

About the Maker

Castelli / Anonima Castelli

Italian design company Castelli began dates from 1877 when Ettore Castelli founded a small workshop in Bologna. In 1939, the firm was renamed Anonima Castelli and began producing modern office furniture for which the brand is best known on the vintage market. It is recognized as one of the foremost manufacturers of Italian design of the 20th century and as the producer of the iconic Plia Chair.

In the 1960s, Giancarlo Piretti (born in Bologna in 1940) joined Castelli as an interior designer. During his twelve years at Castelli, Piretti obtained numerous industrial patents and designed many now iconic models, primarily in seating design. Piretti was instrumental in establishing Castelli’s  international reputation, being the creator of the brand’s most successful and well known designs. Undoubtedly a design classic, Piretti’s plastic folding Plia Chair (1968) was exhibited at the Fiera del Mobile fair in Milan in 1967. The chair, which has sold over four million units since 1969, won the BIO 5 award at the Ljubljana Biennial in 1971, Germany’s Gute Form prize in 1973 and can be found in permanent collections of museums in Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia, and the United States.

Piretti’s most famous designs for Castelli include the DCS 106 Stacking Chair (1965), Plona Lounge Chair (1969), Alky Chair (c. 1970), Plantone Folding Desk (1970), Plano (1971, Gold Medal IBD), Planto Coat Rack (1972), and the modular System 61 Sofa (1973)

In the late-1970s, Piretti worked with Argentinian architect-designer Emilio Ambasz (b. 1943), and the pair created the two ergonomic seating systems Vertebra (1979, winner of the Smau Industrial Design Award) and Dorsal (1981) for Castelli.

Although Castelli’s legacy is often defined by its partnership with Piretti, the brand has produced work by many other talented designers including Claudio Bellini, Rodolfo Bonetto, Michele De Lucchi, Hans Ell, Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas, Gino Gamberini, Nilo Gioacchini, Enzo Mari, Charles Pollock, F.A. Porsche, Mario Ruiz, and Richard Sapper. Important designs include Sapper’s Nine to Five Desk (1986, winner of a Compasso d’Oro); Pollock’s Penelope Chair (1982); Porsche’s Executive Office Series (1989); and Ruiz’ K22 Program (2005).

Castelli received four Compasso d’Oro Awards between 1981 and 1991.

In 1992, Castelli became part of the Haworth Group. Today, Castelli specializes in producing environmentally friendly and sustainable products.
