An important marine oil painting by renowned British maritime artist John Bentham-Dinsdale, depicting the opening moments of the 1881 America's Cup race off New York Harbor. A particularly desirable feature of this painting is the extensive handwritten historical inscription on the reverse by Bentham-Dinsdale himself. The reverse inscription records the challenger as "Atlanta", whereas the yacht's official name was Atalanta. This appears to be a minor spelling variation by the artist, whose extensive accompanying notes otherwise demonstrate considerable historical research and technical accuracy. The inscription includes: > "The America's Cup 1881 > The start of the race > The defender Mischief leading > followed by the challenger Atlanta."
