JOOP BIRKER Tilburg , October 1, 1935 - April 8, 1993 from 1952 to 1955, Johannes (Joop) Wilhelmus Maria Birker followed the predecessor of the Academy of Visual Education and then the Higher National Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
In 1959 he painted a large mural in Tilburg's first nightclub, Campione, on the then Koningstraat. His painting and drawing evolved from figurative through expressive to abstract. He received several awards such as the Tétar van Elven Prize (1955), the Thérèse van Duyl-Schwartze Prize (1960) and the Sinjoren Prize of the city of Antwerp. Birker lived regularly in Antwerp, but also traveled to Italy, Sweden and Spain. In 1961 he moved to Spain and was nicknamed the Spanish Brabander. from then on he became a well-known and prolific painter of materials. Birker returned to the Netherlands in 1985.
