Gorgeous ceramic figurine, part of the 'Signs of the Zodiac' collection, made in the early 20th century from Capodimonte ceramic painted in gold.
Capodimonte is a type of Italian porcelain first developed in the 18th century. It is known for its bright colours, intricate details and striking designs with flowers, animals or mythical figures. Its production requires incredible craftsmanship, as each piece must be hand-painted to create unique designs. For this reason, Capodimonte pieces are highly sought-after and valuable due to their rarity. Over the years, they have become a valuable part of many collections and are considered an important piece of Italian cultural history.
The base is spherical in shape, with a simply splendid gold surround. At the base of the feet is the zodiac sign represented by this statue: Libra.
One leg is slightly forward of the other, entirely wrapped in a golden robe.
The zodiac sign Libra is associated with the image of a basket of pomegranates for several symbolic reasons. Firstly, the shapes of both the fruit and its leaves resemble the sign's symbolization of justice and balance - two scales side by side. Secondly, the pomegranate has been used as a representation of fertility in many cultures throughout history, which is fitting with Libra being a sign focused on relationships and harmony. Lastly, the rich reds and purples of this fruit appear to be aligned with the colours attributed to Libra's air element. All these elements combine to make it an ideal visual representation for this sign of the zodiac.
