About This Piece

An exceptional, old and authentic, adornment or tunic or mask-Integral!-of Oceanian ceremony, in the double or duplicated figure, on its very beautiful contemporary base in raw steel, shamanic, first arts, tribal art, brutalist, shabby-chic , spectacular ceremonial costume of tribute to the deceased to the expressive mask traditionally representing an ancestor, the body covering the bust and the hectic loincloth, appearing here 2 faces (a usable mask and a decorative figure, duplication of the first in decor on the bust , in the sense of exploring!? All information welcome) made of wood, herbs or primitive tissue and braided straw, and mixed techniques, with ocher and glowing shades, a work characteristic of the creations of the Middle Sepik, Papua New Guinea, 1950.

A unique piece, work of an Oceanian artist (s), from the middle of the 20th century, undoubtedly carried out at the time for sale to foreign travelers rather than for cultural use as evidenced by its excellent condition (and the 'Opinion of the curator of a museum of first arts in the USA): she does not seem to have been carried by a shaman. This magnificent set is coming from the old collection of a French diplomat stationed in Oceania in the 1960s, acquired at the time, then transmitted to its descendants.
