About This Piece

Vintage Design

A set of four chairs in a model that is similar to a work of art, it is not possible to look measured on them! The model is designed by Arne Hovmand Olsen for Onsild Stolefabrik in Denmark.

The chair is in model No 75 and is made of teak with dark tones on the frame and rounded cushions.

The legs are cocky slanted and in a dark tone on the teak. The rounded back plate is in a lighter tone and is mounted on the hind legs with a practical handle on the back. The handle significantly simplifies the movement of the chair and is of course also a decorative detail with screws and spacers in brass.

All parts of the chair are soft and rounded, which gives a wonderful tactile feeling. The comfort of the chair is also wonderful and makes it easy to sit for a while or two after dinner =)

The front back and seat are covered

The front back and the seat are upholstered in a honey-colored soft leather from Tärnsjö tannery and give the occupant a cozy feeling.

The chair is 47 cm wide and 45/86 cm high.

In very good condition with few traces of use. New upholstery in seat and back with good bearing capacity and new upholstery in honey-colored soft leather from Tärnsjö Tannery.

About the Creator

Arne Hovmand Olsen

Danish furniture designer Arne Hovmand-Olsen was born in Kirkeby Sogn in 1919. During his formative years, Hovmand-Olsen showed an aptitude for drawing and design and, in 1938, began a cabinetry apprenticeship with the cabinetmaker Peder Olsen Sibast at his eponymous furniture manufactory on Denmark’s island of Funen. Interested in producing his own designs, Hovmand-Olsen enrolled in a technical school specializing in furniture design in Århus in 1941. After graduating, he established his own furniture studio, creating designs in the Scandinavian modern style. His furniture was sold only in Denmark but later found great success when it began to be exported to America.

Hovmand-Olsen’s designs span seating, tables, and secretaries, all of which are characteristically simple in form with clean lines, organic curves, and tapered legs. Like many of his Danish contemporaries, he favored the use of high-quality, beautifully grained woods like teak and rosewood. Notable designs include his Model 175 Chair (1955)—which is often mistaken for N.O. Møller’s Model 77 Chair due to their similar forms—and the Model 240 Lounge Chair for Mogens Kold (1958).

Hovmand-Olsen worked steadily designing furniture for companies such as Alf Juul Rasmussen, A. R. Klingenberg & Søn, Bramin, Elven Geertsen, J.L. Møller, Jutex, Mogens Kold Møbelfabrik, P. Mikklesen, Pedersen & Knap, and Skovmand & Andersen. Sometime in the 1970s, he was forced to close his studio due to illness.

Hovmand-Olsen passed away in 1989.
