Born in July 1971, Marie Bathellier, spent her childhood in Brittany between the land and the sea. She studied Beaux-Arts in Rennes followed by one year in Wroclaw (Poland) at the Academy of Arts and finished at the Sorbonne (Paris) in the Faculté d’Arts plastiques. Since 2003, nature is her work environment – Ile d'Yeu where she lives, countryside and mountains where she spends a lot of time. From this cohabitation she has drawn her way of working : instinctive, experimental, minimal and poetic. Marie Bathellier works in cycles, travels between several disciplines without favouritism – painting, sculpture, installations. The artist finds strength, forms and materials in the wilderness and gardens. Her work is fed by taking notes, by taking photos, collecting materials. Her contemplative approach and embrace of nature, permanently stimulate and renew her work. The artist arranges abstract and minimal forms on large canvases or in series of smaller recycled cardboards. These arrangements create a dialogue between space, colour and texture. The surfaces become sparkly, transparent, pearly or deeply mat as she enhances them using clay, sand or rock dust. They become a playful vision of forms interacting, of textures with soft and powerful colour palettes being stroked by light. Architectural sculptures in untreated wood, totems poles, mobiles, choreographed vegetal creepers or lines of Japanese granite stepping stones reveal a free, spontaneous and sensual artistic work.
