Peter P., Kassel Fountain Pond in Wilhelmshöhe Park Hercules Temple of Apollo Swans, 1960, Oil Painting on Canvas

An artist whose name is not definitively verified (clearly signed "P. Peter" in the lower right corner, exact dates of birth and death unknown) likely created this work in 1960. This atmospheric oil painting, most likely executed on canvas (oil on canvas), measures approximately 26 x 37.5 cm (as it is unspecified). The idyllic, classical landscape depicts one of the most famous and beautiful historical vistas of Kassel, the North Hessian city that hosted documenta: In the foreground, three white swans glide peacefully across the tranquil waters of the Aueteich pond, while on the right bank, the neoclassical Temple of Apollo (often affectionately called the "little temple" on Swan Island) blends picturesquely into the dense, partly autumnal foliage of the old trees. The crowning element of this deep, three-dimensional composition is the majestic Hercules monument, set against a bright, slightly hazy background, perched high above Wilhelmshöhe Mountain Park and bathed in warm light. Stylistically, the work can be categorized as belonging to the traditional, naturalistic landscape and veduta painting of the post-war period. Despite the signature's illegible nature, the painting captivates with its harmonious lighting, meticulous rendering of the architecture, and skillful use of soft local color. Due to the high recognizability of this beloved landmark, the painting possesses a special decorative charm and local historical value for collectors of Kassel and its historic parks.
