Vintage Design

Superb and rare set of six Postmodern bridge dining chairs designed by Hans Hollein (1934–2014) Austrian architect and designer. Circa 1986.

These chairs have a fabulous architectural skyscraper design to them. They are made in solid oak with rush seating. They have a dark, almost ebonised finish which has mellowed and lightly worn nicely in the right places.

There are a few nicks in the wood, mainly to the arms.
The chairs are all sturdy with no loose joints. The drop in rush seating has some loose strands, and a few light marks. The chairs have been cleaned and waxed. Please refer to the photographs.

Hans Hollein was a key figure of postmodern architecture. He designed a small number of furniture pieces, including work for the Memphis Milano Group in the 1980s. The movement’s overriding aim was to develop a new, mostly radical, approach to design. Inspiration was drawn from such movements as Art Deco and Pop Art and futuristic themes.

The chairs were previously in Christie's auction in 2014, and the auction label is still present.
