Dimensions: 26.5 x 17.5 cm. Robert Freund (April 2, 1929, Frankfurt am Main – March 7, 1999, Frankfurt am Main) was a versatile Frankfurt-based visual artist who worked as a painter, sculptor, and printmaker, and received his formal training from 1953 onwards. The present work, "Portrait of a Woman with a Headscarf," is a signed print—based on image analysis, probably a screen print or linocut on paper—measuring 26.5 x 17.5 cm, with the characteristic hand signature "R. Freund" in the lower right corner. The work depicts, in a stylized, modern style, the face of a young woman with a veil or headscarf in delicate shades of gray and blue on a warm background. The oval face, serenely downward-facing, with large, expressively emphasized eyes, a straight nose, and closed lips, radiates a spiritual stillness and introspection that lends the portrait a distinctly Marian, Madonna-like quality. The broad application of color in soft light blue and gray tones, combined with powerful, graphically clear contour lines, characterizes Freund's unmistakable graphic style. Robert Freund was firmly established in the Frankfurt art scene of the post-war period and created a broad body of graphic work encompassing religious, figurative, and abstract motifs; his prints were traded at Catawiki, the Dorotheum in Vienna, and through the Fahning Art Gallery, among others. For collectors of religious art, prints of German post-war modernism, and works with Frankfurt provenance, this print offers an authentic, signed, and visually compelling collector's item. Color serigraph.
