Patricia Urquiola Set of Two Back-Wing Chairs For Cassina. This distinctive chair by Patricia Urquiola outclasses the stereotypes with a bold new plasticity and its own personality. The Back-Wing chair’s modern design structure is made entirely of solid wood. ts innovative shape derives from the pronounced contrast between the thickness of the wood structure, the padded seat and the wrap-around backrest whose sides fold back into two wings that serve as armrests, for added comfort. The beauty of the chair is enhanced by the elegant finishes, the absence of visible stitching and the leather piping that outlines the perimeter of the upholstery, emphasizing the clean lines of this inviting and modern chair. STRUCTURE Solid ash (natural, stained oak or stained black finish) or canaletto walnut SEAT Rigid polyurethane and padding in CFC-free polyurethane foam. UPHOLSTERY Leather. The furniture-making skills known is made manifest in a new chair that, leaving classical stereotypes behind, sparks off powerful new idioms. The frame, in solid ashwood, consists of basic big, bold legs and cross-pieces with a solid and energetic look. The innovative nature of this chair springs from the contrast between the strong lines of the frame and the slender, understated covers, draped like a sheet of paper, conveying a striking sense of movement. The ergonomically-correct angle of the back and the invisible upholstery augment the comfortable look of the chair, creating a wrap-around feel where the turned-down top of the back becomes the arm-rest. The overall look is enhanced thanks to the elegant finishing touches, no stitching in sight, and a delicate leather-trim delineating the edges of the back and seat. About the Creator

Patricia Urquiola

Born in Oviedo in 1961, Spanish architect and designer Patricia Urquiola studied at the Polytechnic University of Milan and the Technical University of Madrid, graduating in 1989. From 1990 until 1996, she was Assistant Professor to Achille Castiglioni and Eugenio Bettinelli at the Polytechnic University of Milan and E.N.S.C.I. in Paris. Also during this period, she worked in product development at De Padova, where she and Vico Magistretti created the popular Flower and Loom Sofa designs, among others.

Next, Urquiola became head of Lissoni Associates design group, where her housewares and furniture clients included Alessi, Flos, Cappellini, Cassina, and Kartell. In 2001, she joined forces with Martino Berghinz to open her own studio in Milan, where she continues to live and work today.

Urquiola’s designs combine clean, modern aesthetics with traditional Spanish and Italian crafts (often textiles). She draws upon eclectic cultural elements to humanize her designs. Her architectural work includes hotels, retail locations, and homes. Her product design clients include Foscarini, Cappellini, and B&B. Famed projects include the Fjord chair for Moroso (2002), the woven Flo chairs for Driade (2004), and her Crochet rug for Paola Lenti (2005). Urquiola’s work continues to focus primarily on design and architectural projects as well as exhibition concepts.
