About This Piece

Vintage Design

A set of four iconic Mid-Century lounge chairs: three in black leather and one in brown leather, all with rosewood frames. These chairs were made under license from Arne Norell by 'Scanform' in Colombia in the 1965s. The authenticity has been confirmed by Arne Norell’s daughter, Marie Norell.

Arne Norell (1917-1971) was a Swedish furniture designer.
In 1954 Arne founded his own company by the name of 'Möbel AB Arne Norell'. Today, this company is run by his daughter Marie Norell and her family and is known as 'Norell Furniture’.

Many of the 'Scanform' edition chairs were exported to the USA and the Netherlands Antilles and are very rare.
These specific chairs were sold to a store in Aruba.
A Dutch lady and her family were living in Aruba. They bought these chairs in this small furniture store in Oranjestad, the capital city of Aruba, around 1970.
After being a teacher on a girls’ school she moved back to her motherland, with her family and the chairs.
A great story of iconic chairs that traveled from Colombia to Holland.

The chairs have now been fully restored and received the love and care they deserve. The rosewood has been treated by a professional wood restoration company, cleaned, and polished with beeswax.
All the leather has been cleaned and slightly painted where necessary. To retain the durability of these fantastic chairs, the leather has been treated with a leather nutrition oil multiple times.
⁠The stitches that required re-stitching have been repaired by hand with the saddle stitch. This strong stitch will assure that the chairs remain fully functioning for many more years. These repairs have been done by a professional handbag designer in The Netherlands.

Only one screw in all four of the chairs is not vintage authentic. To assure the same quality, the replaced screw is sent by the husband of Marie Norell and is the same one that is being used in their current safari chairs.

In case the buyer desires, there is possibility to paint all faded parts of the leather as an extra service.

About the Creator

Arne Norell

Designer Arne Norell was born in 1917 in Åsele, Sweden, and was active in the postwar era—at the height of international fascination with Scandinavian design. Little biographical information is available about his formative years, but we do know that he opened a furniture workshop in Stockholm in 1954. In 1958, he launched his eponymous manufacturing company, Møbel AB Arne Norell, on a two-acre farm in Småland. Through the course of his prolific career, this idyllic setting remained Norell’s central source of inspiration and the site where he designed and produced all of his own furniture until he passed away in 1971.

Norell is often praised for pioneering “conceptual” furniture, because he employed traditional materials—leather, turned wood, bentwood, and metal, for example—in unexpected forms, often with lyrical results. His designs have an affinity with those of Danish designer Kaare Klint (1888-1954), who, a generation before, brought time-honored, vernacular forms into modernist expression. In fact, Klint’s iconic Safari Chair (1933) inspired Norell to create the Sirocco Safari Chair (1964), which is lightweight, collapsible, and held together by leather support straps instead of glue or screws. Norell’s wood-framed Inka Armchair, Indra Sofa, and Ilona Sofa (design dates unverified) are likewise held together by leather.

While Norell’s designs found a solid market within his lifetime, his greatest recognition came posthumously: The British Furniture Manufacturers Association awarded Norell’s low-slung, steel-framed, leather-clad Ari Chair (1966) “Show Piece of the Year” in 1973. Norell’s pieces have become increasingly collectible in the 2010s.

Today, Norell’s daughter and son-in-law, Marie Norell-Möller and Thomas Möller, carry on his work, operating under the name Norell Møbel AB. In 2014, the company celebrated its 60^th anniversary. It’s the only Swedish company that has continuously manufactured the entirety of Norell’s catalogue since the 1950s.
