About This Piece

Vintage Design

An iconic Hunting Table in teak designed by Børge Mogensen for Søborg Møbelfabrik in Denmark.

A rarely seen dining table that becomes an obvious and unique centerpiece in all modern dining rooms. Easy to place next to chairs in all imaginable models and expressions. There is plenty of space between the pairs of legs and therefore even wide chairs easily fit at the table.

Mogensen rarely used steel as a prominent material for his designs, but on this particular model we see it being used as support for the strikes.
The combination of teak, oak and steel gives a striking look and is reminiscent of works by Jacobsen and Wegner with a free and relaxed feel that Danish furniture often has.

The table top and battens are teak with a framing edge around them. The legs are in oak and are cockily slanted.

The slats make it easy to extend the table while they are always at hand when they need to be used. The punches can be quickly dismantled from the table.

The legs can be conveniently folded in for transport and storage.

140x90x74+2×50 cm and the table can be extended up to 240 cm.

In very good condition with only small traces of use.

About the Creator

Børge Mogensen

Designer Børge Mogensen was born in Aalborg, Denmark in 1914. He studied furniture design at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts under esteemed Professor Kaare Klint from 1936–38. Next, he studied at the School of Furniture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1938–41, where he also served as Klint’s teaching assistant. In 1942, Mogensen became head of design at the Danish Consumers Coöperative Society (FDB). He opened his own design office in 1950, and was one of a handful of designers who helped define and popularize the "Danish Modern" design style.

Mogensen’s aesthetic was clean and highly functional. He was driven to create affordable, practical designs, and his preferred material was wood. Clients included Fredericia Stolefabrik, Fritz Hansen, and Søborg Møbelfabrik, among others. Notable projects include Spokeback Sofa (1945), and Spanish Chair (1959), as well as a variety of shelving and storage designs. He was honored with the Eckersberg Medal in 1950, the annual prize from the Copenhagen Carpentry Guild in 1953, and the C.F. Hansen Medal in 1972.

Mogensen passed away in Denmark in 1972.

About the Maker

Søborg Møbelfabrik

Danish furniture manufacturer Søborg Møbelfabrik was founded in 1890 by cabinetmaker Jacob E. Jacobsen. Dedicated to producing consistently high-quality furniture that showcased the Danish design tradition, Søborg Møbelfabrik—which was managed by generation after generation of the Jacobsen family—has worked with some of Denmark’s most celebrated mid-century furniture designers.

Located in the suburbs of Copenhagen, the traditional cabinetmaking workshop established by Jacob Jacobsen was modernized by his sons Arne (1899-1977, no relation to the mid-century designer Arne Jacobsen) and Orla (1895-1980) when they took over in 1930. They collaborated with several important cabinetmakers, architects, and burgeoning designer talents over the mid-century period, including Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907-1993), Mogens Lassen (1901-1987), Børge Mogensen (1914-1972), and Bernt Petersen (1937-2017).

Throughout the 1940s and ‘50s, Søborg Møbelfabrik participated in the annual exhibitions held by the Copenhagen Guild of Joiners. In 1942, architect Mogens Lassen designed a solid mahogany stool in a sculpted semi-circle shape for the Guild of Joiners' furniture exhibition at the Museum of Industrial Art in Copenhagen. Other notable designs for Søborg include Mogensen’s King of Diamonds Chair (1944) and Chinese Cabinet (also 1944, exhibited at the Guild of Joiners) and Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen’s No. 302 cabinet, No. 309a sideboard, No. 311 dining set, and No. 316 and 317 chairs (all 1950s).

In 1976, designer Christian Hvidt (b. 1946) collaborated with Søborg, creating several designs for home and office furniture. His SM03, SM76, and SM200 wall units are among his most renowned designs. Søborg Møbelfabrik continues to produce a wide range of contemporary and classic designs, and is also licensed to sell designs originally produced by the manufacturers Carl Hansen A/S, Fritz Hansen, Fredericia, Erik Jørgensen, and Rud Rasmussen.
