Born in Valence in 1938, Pierre Boncompain was encouraged from an early age in his love of the arts. He graduated at the top of his class from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, receiving the Drôme General Council Prize, and later studied in Raymond Legueult's studio at the École Nationale des Beaux Arts.
Pierre Boncompain's work is evocative of the environment and lifestyle of the South of France. It portrays a broad combination of modern influences, with exquisite tone combinations in a radiant and joyful Matisse-like clarity of light. Each year Boncompain spends a long summer in Provence, absorbing its beauty, and the rest of the year he works in his Paris studio.
For his pastel works Pierre Boncompain uses Roché pastels. Born in Versailles in 1720, Henri Roché took his place and worked with artists such as Degas and Whistler to develop pastels according to their preferences. Today, Maison du Pastel is the oldest pastel manufacturer in the world. Each individual pastel stick is made completely by hand, maximizing the amount of pigment with a small amount of binder in order to create pure color. The resulting depth of tone in the artwork is exquisite.
Pierre Boncompain counts among his collectors Irving Blum, the first gallerist to organize a solo exhibition for Andy Warhol, and Al Gore. Pierre Boncompain's works have been exhibited in museums around the world, including the Musée de Lille, the Kajikawa Foundation, Kyoto, the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, the Takashimaya Museum, Osaka, the Singer Foundation, Holland, the Navio Museum, Kyoto, the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan, and solo retrospective exhibitions at the Shanghai Art Museum, China, and the Musée de Valence, France.
