About This Piece

Vintage Design

This simple, functional stool consists of a round seat made of molded plywood with a dark lacquer finish and a chrome-plated tubular steel frame. The design is typical for industrial use, with functionality and stackability being paramount.

The seat is round and slightly sloped downwards, providing a pleasant feel when carried.

The four-legged frame is sturdily welded and connected to a cross frame at the bottom for additional reinforcement. The visible plywood structure on the edge of the seat is striking, hinting at the classic construction style of the 1950s to 1970s.

The manufacturer's seal on the underside of the seat is particularly noteworthy: Bigla, a traditional Swiss furniture manufacturer based in Biglen, known for functional, durable school and office furniture. The stool belongs to a product line that was widely used in Swiss educational institutions and is valued for its robustness and long service life. The design can be stylistically classified as belonging to the Mid-Century Modern era, which emphasized practicality, authenticity of materials, and reduction.

Condition: The stool shows clear signs of wear. The seat shows visible paint chips and scratches that expose the underlying plywood. Wear is also clearly visible on the edges. The chrome-plated frame is sturdy and generally in good condition, but shows minor signs of rust and abrasion in the area of the welds. Its functionality is unaffected, the structure is solid, and the stool can still be used without any problems. In its current condition, it is particularly suitable for lovers of authentic patina or for targeted restoration.
