Exceptional Contemporary Design

Whorl Console, designed and fabricated by Neal Aronowitz, was the winner of the 2017 Gray Award for Product Design in the Furniture/Lighting category. Among the judges were Philippe Starck. Karim Rashid, and Ingo Maurer.
The unique design and specialized casting techniques developed by Aronowitz to fabricate the table were acknowledged by the judges, including Ingo Maurer who announced the winning design, noting “It’s an incredible achievement- the studies he undertook, his enthusiasm for the material, his persistence in following his vision, and, of course, the shape. It’s a very nice product. I would like to have one.”
The innovative console table is made of Concrete Canvas, a patented concrete-impregnated fabric not commonly used in furniture design.
A ground-breaking new material, Concrete Canvas allows concrete to be used in radically innovative ways. It is a flexible concrete-impregnated fabric that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable, water-proof, and fire-resistant concrete layer. Essentially it is concrete cloth on a roll.
The idea behind the Whorl series was to make a hand-crafted piece that has presence as both sculpture and functional furniture. Aronowitz saw an opportunity as he says to “explore the material’s unique structural properties to express a fluid form, in contrast to the dense and heavy associations that we have with concrete.”
The challenge in the design and construction of this series was to stretch the tensile strength of the material to its limits for aesthetic beauty and interest, seemingly defying gravity. At the same time, it needed to maintain its structural integrity as a utilitarian object intended for everyday use.
New casting and forming techniques were developed to achieve the ribbon-like structure of the table, The surface consists of pigmented cement mortar lightly skim coated over the entire surface and sanded to a highly smooth and polished finish.

About the Creator

Neal Aronowitz

Designer-craftsman Neal Aronowitz was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1956. He studied art and architecture at the City University of New York from 1973 to 1975 before going on to study photography and sculpture at Massachusetts College of Art from 1975 to 1976. In 1984, he established Neal Aronowitz Tile & Stone, a successful Brooklyn and later Portland, Oregon-based tile, stone, and interiors business that continues to operate today. In 1985, he began designing and building furniture “quietly and informally as a side business” for private clients in New York. He relocated to Portland in 1996 and continued to make furniture on commission. In 2014, he formally established his eponymous Portland studio, focusing on designing and making art furniture and lighting.

Aronowitz unveiled his studio’s debut project, the 2014 Whorl Table , at Portland Design Week. This experimental, sculptural piece is composed of a single sheet of concrete canvas—a high-tech, eco-friendly, cement-impregnated textile used in disaster shelters and drainage ditches—and seemingly defies gravity with its folding arabesques. His studio’s first lighting design, the 2015 Boro Boro Light, was included in LAMP 2015, a juried international lighting show in Vancouver, British Columbia. This glass chandelier consists of overlapping borosilicate glass rods—inspired by the burr crystal form, a three-dimensional cluster resembling children's jacks—and earned second place in the show’s “Established Designer” category. (Among the judges were noted designers Tom Dixon, Omar Arbel, and Michael Anastassiades.)

Describing his aesthetic, Aronowitz tells us, “I am drawn to creating handmade, sculpturally evocative forms utilizing natural materials that express dynamic movement and forces.”

As of this writing, Aronowitz has several projects in various states of production, all of which champion the bold over the conventional.
