Oil on canvas. Signed and dated at lower left. On the back further signature, date and title. Milanese artist descending from a cadet branch of the noble Gonzaga of Mantua, Giovan Francesco took part in the Second World War when he was still twenty years old with the Savoia Cavalry participating, with the squadron "Ghost" to patrol actions in the Russian steppe. The months spent in close contact with the horse during the war, ignited in him a real passion for horses, which became the privileged subject of many paintings, sculptures and poems. Self-taught artist, he declared "my true teacher is Nature", and faithful to it, after the horses, he devoted himself mainly to landscapes and still lifes, always depicted "en plein air". Vittorio Sgarbi wrote about him: 'Giovan Francesco Gonzaga's wisdom lies in his drawing, which is strong and decisive...... The images vibrate with restlessness, in the sign of the struggle of man against himself, in the hell of a history that always seems to repeat the same drama. But if the preparatory drawing is admirable, the color of this artist has a royalty and a sensitivity that come from a musical perception of color, where the palette expresses itself in sudden, in variations and in pulsating rhythms. His works are in several museums, including that of the Cavalry of Pinerolo, the Historical Museum of the Guardia di Finanza in Rome, the Museum of Tel Aviv, The Art Museum in Los Angeles, in public and private collections in Italy, France, Spain, Luxembourg, Indonesia, China, Japan, Singapore and America. In this still life the chromatisms are exalted above all: the three elements - the blue coccoma, that is an enameled pitcher, a cut lemon and a glass of milk -, well spaced between them and proposed in contrasting colors, stand out on the two shades of green of the background. The work is presented in frame.
