About This Piece

This oil on canvas depicts a nude academy or nude study, typical of 19th-century classical art. At the center of the composition is a nude old man seated on a stool. The painter has done a remarkable job of capturing the model's complexion with beautiful definition. The details are so fine that they give the impression that the model is present in person in the room. Unfortunately, the artist's signature is at bottom right, but has become illegible over time. This work offers a fascinating insight into the artistic mastery of the period and the fascination with human anatomy in nineteenth-century art.
