The Italian Arteeluce lighting company is founded in 1939 by Gino Sarfatti During the Second World War, Sarfatti escapes in Switzerland, and returns to Milan only after the war to reopen his company. In 1951 he opens the first store of Arteluce. The store is redesigned by Marco Zanuso in 1953. The second store of Arteluce is designed by the long-standing friend of Sarfatti and lighting designers Vittorio Vigan in 1961 Ararteluce immediately states successfully as a brand of visionary lighting thanks to the dedication of Sarfatti to technical, material and production research. Draw more than 400 lamps during his life, famous for their minimalist but still expressive aesthetics and for their experimental materials. In the mid-1950s he began working with acrylic glass and at the beginning of the 70s he is pioneer of the use of halogen bulbs. Sarfacts also devoted himself to improving each single element of the lamps, from the switch to the cables to the reflector. The Minimalist Model 1063 (1954) will always influence the Italian design of the lamps from the ground, and will be awarded with the prestigious Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale - it is also the most eloquent example of the purist vision of Sarfacts of beauty in the objects of everyday. The same year Arteluce wins the golden compass for the Model 559 and then again the following year for the Model 1055 In 1972 Sarfatti sells the company in FLOS. Many creations of arteluce are still in production today, and many original models maintain a place in the permanent collections of important museums like New York's Moma.
